DATADVANCE Helps Storengy Obtain Reliable Forecasts of Gas Properties for Optimal Monitoring and Management of the Underground Gas Storages

TOULOUSE, France – 23.09.2021. Storengy, an ENGIE subsidiary, one of the world leaders in underground natural gas storage (UGS), uses pSeven software platform by DATADVANCE, an independent software developer of design exploration, predictive modeling, automation & integration solutions, to obtain reliable forecasts of gas properties for the optimal monitoring and management of UGS. UGS ― depleted fields, aquifers and salt caverns, along with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals and gas transportation network, are key assets to ensure reliable and continuous gas supply all year long, taking into account the gas demand fluctuation according to seasons.

Gas injected in the gas transportation network, and therefore in the UGS, must fulfill some technical specifications. In the case with aquifer gas storages, some physical and chemical reactions might happen in the underground porous media, which might modify the characteristics of the UGS-produced gas and challenge a direct re-injection in the transportation system. For an optimal monitoring and management of the UGS portfolio, it is therefore key to have reliable forecasts of such UGS-produced gas characteristics. While the physics is well understood and in line with the observations, no numerical modelling tool is currently available to mimic such chemical phenomena.

«We have capitalized on a raw dataset thanks to the extended data analysis and predictive modelling features of pSeven software platform by DATADVANCE. It allowed us to assess and rank the impact of different input parameters on the output gas properties. We were able to build reliable predictive Machine Learning (ML) models to forecast the gas key characteristics over some periods of interest. This pSeven application is complementary to other internally developed approaches and, by cross-checking, reinforces our confidence in the obtained forecasts. Implementation of such technologies is in line with Industry 4.0 program that Storengy has joined in order to boost the digitalization of its industrial sites,” – said Thomas Schaaf, senior reservoir engineer at Storengy.

“We are proud to support Storengy in the digitalization strategy and other strategic initiatives, such as energy transition. At DATADVANCE, we are certain that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ML-based software solutions are vital to support energy companies in their transition to a future sustainable energy system, in particular, energy efficiency increase, renewable energy solutions and emission reduction. As in the above-mentioned case, DATADVANCE software solutions allow applying the AI capabilities to the industrial data of customers and building reliable and accurate predictive models of assets and networks faster. The combination of utility data, domain knowledge and industrial AI helps energy businesses be more flexible and continuously deliver safer, cleaner, and more sustainable energy. Drawing on this project, our companies will continue to collaborate to develop and implement the innovative technologies for energy efficiency, clean energy production and storage, ” – stated Laurent Chec, Vice-president of Global Sales at DATADVANCE.
